In moments of ethical conflict, I have often heard the clarifying question, ‘What would Jesus say?’ I wonder who else we turn to when we are looking for encouragement or focus in confusing times? Who are the local prophets that see clearly and are not afraid to resist the status quo? So, I ask myself, ‘Is there a modern equivalent of a Gandhi, a Martin Luther King Jr, or a Desmond Tutu in Canada?’ I begin with Tommy Douglas, who said:
‘We are all in this world together, and the only test of our character that matters is how we look after the least fortunate among us. How we look after each other, not how we look after ourselves. That’s all that really matters, I think.’
