In Judaism, Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) is observed in fall. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on October 2, starting a ten-day period of reflection and contemplation that culminates with Yom Kippur on October 12. This time was traditionally referred to as the ‘Days of Awe.‘
Rosh Hashanah signifies the day on which the Creator completed the creation of the world. Traditions include eating apple slices dipped in honey in anticipation of a sweet new year, and blowing the shofar or ram’s horn as a ‘wake up call’ to begin the process of introspection.
In that spirit, this morning’s service will reflect upon the wonders of the natural world as the season turns – sunset glancing through red-tinged leaves, flocks of migrating birds passing through, the feeling of change in the air.
