  • Sue’s talk is a history lesson of how song was used to communicate information to the black slaves to help them find their way from the plantations in the South to where they would be free.  A few of those songs have survived and it’s fascinating to see how they were actually directions in code secretly given to those who attempted the arduous year-long (and often longer) journey to where they could start a new life.   Of course there is an open invitation to sing along; all these songs were simple and repetitious and very easy to learn and sing.
